This section is a list of possible referrals to assist a child to transition to appropriate supports and services and ensure that your child and your family have access to all available resources to support your child’s needs.
0 – School Entry
A universal screening program through the Infant Hearing Program is available for all babies born in Ontario. The screening occurs at the Timmins and District Hospital and follow-up when required, is scheduled through the Northeast Infant Hearing Program.
Below is a list of agencies that your child may access depending on their needs. Keeping in mind that waiting lists exist, the referral should be made as soon as possible.
- Audiologist see College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario
- Family doctor and/or pediatrician
- Northeast Ontario Infant Hearing Program
- ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist / Otolaryngologist)
- Infant Development Program
- Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) for general supportive counseling
- E.C. Drury (English services) or to Centre Jules Leger (French services) as soon as child is identified with hearing loss
- Preschool Speech and Language Program
- Integrated Preschool Services through Community Living
- North East Community Care Access Centre
- If a child requires more than one assessment at one time, and does not have service providers already involved a referral to SCAT can be made by service coordinator
- If progressive or later onset of hearing loss is suspected child may be referred to the Infant Hearing Program for a hearing assessment.
*Entry to school is very important, some of the agencies listed above, can assist the family with transition to school at the time of your child’s registration. Please access education for more information.
Junior Kindergarten – High School
At this time, your child may require updated assessments in planning for transition. Below is a list of agencies that your child may access. If you are not already involved with an agency, please keep in mind that waiting lists exist and a referral should be made as soon as possible in order to determine eligibility.
- Audiologist see College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario
- Your child’s school board
- E.C. Drury
- Centre Jules Leger
- North East Community Care Access Centre
- Child and Family Services of Timmins and District
- Other appropriate Associations depending on your child’s diagnosis
- With a doctor’s referral, specialized assessments may be accessed through pediatric centres and hospitals

High School – Adulthood
At this time, your youth/young adult may require updated assessments in planning for transition. Below is a list of agencies that your youth/young may access. If you are not already involved with an agency, please keep in mind that waiting lists exist and a referral should be made as soon as possible in order to determine eligibility.
- Audiologist see College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario
- Your youth/young adult’s school board
- E.C. Drury
- Centre Jules Leger
- Post-secondary Institution
- North East Community Care Access Centre
- Child and Family Services of Timmins and District
- Other appropriate Associations depending on your youth/young adult’s diagnosis
- With a doctor’s referral, specialized assessments may be accessed through pediatric centres and hospitals
*Transition between schools may occur at this age. Some of the agencies listed above, can assist the family with a transition to a new school or a post-secondary institution. Please access education for more information. At this time, your youth/young adult may have completed their education, please refer to employment for more information.
Referral to the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) for ongoing lifetime support beginning at 18 years of age.
